Inmanycases,insightsintobiologygainedfromrarediseaseshaveinformed researchapproachesandtreatmentstrategiesformorecommondiseases;forexample, knowledgegainedfromthestudyofPAPabouttheroleofGM-CSFinthelunghas sparkedinterestintheuseofantiGM-CSFapproachestocontrolbothpulmonaryand extrapulmonaryin ammationinavarietyofdiseases. The ndingthatinterstitiallung diseasedevelopsinfamilieswithcytotoxicmutationsinsurfactantproteinC(SP-C), agenewhichisexpressedonlyinalveolartypecells,hasunderscoredtheimportance oftheintegrityofthealveolarepitheliuminthepathogenesisofparenchymal brosis.
